Comparison Among Diesel Engines and also Gasoline Engines

,

According to the type of fuel, the engines can be classified into gasoline engines and diesel engines.

Let's understand how these two types of engines work. Take the single cylinder gasoline engines for instance; the gasoline engines is equipped with pistons that are connected with bent axles through gudgeon pin and connecting nod. Then the pistons are having the reciprocating movement in the cylinder and drive bent axles by connecting rod. And there are inlet valves and exhaust valves to suck the fresh air and remove the exhausted gases. As a whole, there are four piston strokes including air inflowing, compression, working and exhausting. The diesel engines are working based upon the principle of diesel cycle which is a reversible gas cycle consisting of adiabatic compression, heating at limited pressure, adiabatic expansion and heat releasing at c

onstant volume. The distinctive feature of diesel engines is that the gases in the cylinder are at compression ignition instead of regular ignition. The following points are the comparison between diesel engines and gasoline engines.

Fuel Economy

The automobiles equipped with diesel engines can be able to achieve the fuel economy without the supporting of shut-down system and tyres which have a low rolling resistance. In comparison with it, the gasoline engines have high oil consumption. It consumes 2-3 more liters of fuel than diesel engines at the same displacement every one hundred kilometers.

Service life

Diesel engines have fewer abrasion compared with gasoline engines. Generally a heavy truck with a diesel engine can run 100 kilometers during an overhaul. In most case, the cars with diesel engines can run 30 kilometers well without any engine failures.

Replaceable Fuel

Unlike gasoline engines, diesel engines are able to consume the non-fossil fuel (biodiesel). Now diesel engine manufacturer can support the diesel engine to be available to consume the fuel which is a mixture of 20% of biodiesel and 80% of fossil.

Safety

The fuels of diesel engines have fewer volatilizations than gasoline engines. It can suffer from high pressure and temperature when it's ignited. That makes the disposal of diesel safer and limits the chance of explosion by the broken oil tank.

Noise

Compared with gasoline engines for which most of the noises come from the exhaust system, the diesel engines' noises come from the engines themselves. And that really makes the noise to be heard more easily.

Charges and Weight

With using a higher compression ratio that enables the air to be compressed to 1/25 of its original size, diesel engines are more powerful while needing more charges. They should take more money to manufacture.

Discharge

The discharge of diesel engines is more serious than gasoline engines generally. Though there is a design to reduce the discharge by the help of ammonia gas, the technology of discharge hasn't got mature.

As a whole, diesel engines mostly are applied to the heavy transportation such as the heavy truck, watercraft, diesel locomotive, tractors to bring the best capabilities of diesel engines into play; gasoline engines are fitted with the compact cars which don't need very strong power.
